Unyoked Adds Six New Cabins That Are Perfect for Switching Off This Spring

Unyoked’s off-grid cabins are a safe haven for weary city dwellers looking to get back to nature. The selling point has always been that they’re located just a few hours from urban centres. “They’re deliberately only two hours away, because while it would be great to have these experiences off the grid and miles away, that’s tough to do in modern life,” co-founder Chris Grant told Broadsheet.

The team has added six more tiny houses to the mix just in time for spring adventures, bringing its total offering to 100 stays across Australia, New Zealand and the UK. The new cabins are all around two hours’ drive from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. They follow the same footprint as the rest: little-to-no reception, access to unrivalled wilderness – and some are even dog-friendly.

Anant, Central Gippsland, Vic

Anant is a secluded hideaway in the heart of Gippsland (about three hours south-east of Melbourne), the traditional land of the Gunaikurnai people. It’s located on the same property as Bastian, but you wouldn’t know it unless you choose to book the two cabins with friends. No reception bars give you the opportunity to totally disconnect from work/life/stress and come home feeling utterly refreshed. Checkout is at 11am, which gives you plenty of time to enjoy a morning cuppa soundtracked by nature.

Orla, Avoca, Vic

A “spicy” spot according to Unyoked’s access scale, Orla is a pet-friendly cabin two hours west of Melbourne on the traditional land of the Djadjawurrung people. You’ll share a property with other guests at Frankie and Neada, which means this cabin is great for a group getaway – although there’s still plenty of solitude if you’d rather be on your own. Visit the neighbouring wineries or take a more adventurous spin; this location is right beside the Pyrenees State Forest.

Heike, Lower Hunter, NSW

Located in the Hunter Valley, Heike is the ultimate home-away-from-home just an hour and a half north of Sydney. On the traditional land of the Darkinjung people, this cabin is all about dirt roads and forest bathing. Forget about your phone (it won’t work out here anyway) and perch yourself in the hammock for an afternoon of max relaxing. Whip up dinner over a campfire and then retire for the night to enjoy Unyoked’s signature linen-clad bed.

Vera, Oberon, NSW

With views over rolling countryside, Vera is waiting to welcome you with wide-open spaces. About two and a half hours west of Sydney, it has a similar outlook to Tibor if you’re an Unyoked fiend looking for your next hit. Located on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri, Gundungurra and Dharug nations, the Blue Mountains provide the perfect backdrop for a weekend of adventure. There’s a heater and a hot shower for extra cosiness when you return to the cabin.

Jean, Moogerah, Qld

Jean is located two and a half hours south-ish of Brisbane and two hours west of the Gold Coast in the Scenic Rim region, the traditional land of the Jagara people. The Unyoked team deems the access “medium spice” as it’s an 850-metre walk from car park to cabin. There’s no reception but plenty of space for calm, creativity and clarity under the shadow of Mount Greville. You’ll have access to a gas stove plus pots, pans and utensils for cooking. And there’s even air con (the cabin runs off solar power).

Dante, Maroon, Qld

About one and a half hours south-west of Brisbane (and the same distance west of the Gold Coast) on traditional Bundjalung lands, Dante is primed for solo travel or couples looking to escape. There’s a picnic table and an outdoor firepit for al fresco fun. And you can bring your four-legged friend for an additional $40 per night. Reception is limited so make sure you pack a good book and your hiking kit – you’re on the doorstep of Mount Barney National Park.
