POETRY READING: On September 9, the Lansingburgh Historical Society will welcome several poets for readings on the porch of the Herman Melville House at 2 114th Street, Troy. Hosted by Nancy Klepsch and Dan Wilcox, poetry will start at noon and run until 3:00pm. The Melville House will be open for tours from 10:00 until noon only. Bring your lawn chairs and/or blankets to sit on the lawn and enjoy the poetry. A $10 donation is appreciated.

GARAGE SALE: The Woman’s Club of Albany will open the doors of its historic home for a “super” garage sale on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9. The event will take place at 725 Madison Ave., Albany, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A special preview sale will be held on Thursday, Sept. 7, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for an entry fee of $5. Proceeds from the event benefit The Woman’s Club, a non-profit organization founded in 1910 to improve conditions for women and children in Albany. The sale will feature a wide variety of vintage and new donated items, including furniture, small appliances, jewelry, glassware, linens, toys and books, new and “newish” fall and winter women’s and men’s clothing, coats and shoes and baby and children’s things. There also will be a raffle of gift baskets. Public donations of clean, intact items for the sale will be accepted on Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 6.p.m. at the WCA. No bowling balls, car seats, electronics, fish tanks, bedding, mattresses, exercise equipment or skis will be accepted.

FAMILY FARM DAY: Hosted by the Albany County Cornell Cooperative Extension, held at CN Tommell Cattle Company, LLC, 142 Rock Rd, Berne. Join us from 11am – 3pm for Albany County Family Farm Day! COMIC JAM: At the Troy Public Library. Join us for our first COMIC JAM of 2023! This program is a collaborative storytelling game for cartoonists of all ages and abilities hosted by Ira Marcks. All are welcome to join, adults, teenagers, and children alike. Each participant starts with a 11×17 comic page with six large empty panels. Before drawing, each artist chooses from a series of predetermined ‘story prompts’ (silly phrases like “Monday at the Monster Office” or “Night at the Vampire Hotel”). Their first task is to come up with a scene and characters that suits the prompt then draw, ink, and color the first panel of their comic. When they finish a panel they find another comic jammer in the room who has completed a panel and they trade comics with them. Each artist then elaborates on the story by drawing in the next panel. Every comic continues to get passed around from artist to artist until it arrives back at the original artist who must draw a conclusion to their original comic in the sixth panel. This is a drop-in program from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. Come at your leisure, draw, collaborate, and engage with other comic jammers, and then leave whenever you’d like. Ira will be around to answer questions, sign and sell books, and generally offer guidance and a helping hand. This in-person event is free and open to the public. No registration required. Meet at the Eldridge Research Center for a reading of “Beaver and Otter Get Along… Sort Of” and a drawing activity with illustrator Meg Sodano. Learn about the special adaptations beavers have and how their behaviors impact the ecosystem. Weather permitting, following the indoor activity we will head outside for a hike around Lincoln Pond (0.8 miles, at a leisurely walking pace) to see beaver lodges and other signs of our resident beavers.

Russ Vandervoort, Waterford Town Historian will lead a walking tour of downtown Waterford, describing local landmarks and influential residents who lived there in the mid-19th century. Troy Night Out is an extended evening highlighting shops, restaurants, arts and culture that takes place on the last Friday of every month in downtown Troy. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. BBQ DINNER: Newtonville United Methodist Church is happy to announce its BROOKS BARBECUE dinner. NUMC is located at the corner of Rt. 9 & Maxwell Rd. near Siena College. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 35 State St. in Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. KNIT & CROCHET GROUP: Join the Troy Public Library for a bi-weekly stitching group from 10 to 11 a.m. on every first and third Friday of the month. Whether you have experience knitting or crocheting or you want to start learning a new skill, this group is for you! Participants will work together to stitch blankets and other needed items to donate to local homeless shelters and outreach groups. Participants are also welcome to work on their own personal projects. Bring your own knitting needles and crochet hooks or use what we have available.
