Festivals should be inclusive:
We need to begin by refraining from setting off fireworks and providing the emotional support that strays and pets require during Diwali. A festival should be inclusive. If even one being is suffering, we must question whether it’s truly worth it. I stay with my babies throughout the festivities. Additionally, I include a liquid medicine in their diet a week before
to help them cope with the loud noises and anxiety.
I create a safe space for my fur babies:
Diwali, for me, is about participating in rituals, enjoying the festivities, and spending time with family. I keep my fur babies indoors and create a safe space for them to relax with their favourite toys. I play soothing music and use calming scents to help them feel more at ease. I’m also careful with the decorations, making sure they are all pet-safe.
Karan Patel with Naughty
He stays inside and gets treats:
During Diwali, we ensure that Naughty stays in our room with the windows tightly shut and the air conditioner turned up to help him feel comfortable. While he isn’t particularly scared of fireworks, he gets exhausted from loud noises during the celebrations. After our Diwali puja, he gets his favourite treat for prasad and a new necktie to wear for our Diwali party.
Kratika Sengar with her pet
Sit with pets when the noise peaks, reassure them:
I think keeping pets in a room at a comfortable temperature while the world celebrates outside is fine. One can only do what is in one’s control to make them comfortable. My pets are rather boisterous; they don’t get affected by the noise or the

she likes and try to pamper her:
My heart breaks to see Angel getting all worked up at the sound of crackers. I play music, especially
, that she likes listening to. I have soundproof windows, so that helps, too. I try to pamper Angel with treats, but she doesn’t eat or drink. It’s difficult to see her running helter-skelter. I shudder to think what the street dogs go through. I make sure I am with Angel.
Devoleena Bhattacharjee and Namish Taneja with their pets
I provide treats to comfort them: Namish Taneja
I have four dogs and they get frightened by the loud sounds of crackers. I wish I could take them to a quiet place during Diwali, but unfortunately, it’s not feasible since we perform puja at our home. To comfort them, I provide treats infused with hemp seed oil and prebiotics. To further minimise the discomfort, I play calming music.
Sheeba Akashdeep with her pets
We make them a part of the festivities:
During the festive season, we make our home pet-friendly by providing them with a quiet atmosphere by stopping noisy activities and playing calming music. They often hide in closets and shiver due to the loud sounds. I ensure that my pets join us during
and parties. We provide snacks, giving them a sense of being part of the festivities.
We get special treats for our pet: Ekta Saraiya
Fortunately, Millar isn’t scared of loud noises. We perform the Diwali
and decorate our house, and Millar is always curious about what’s happening. We also get special treats for him, like pet-friendly
made of sweet potato and carrots. We even dress him in a kurta, to make him look even more handsome.
Ekta Saraiya and Charrul Malik with their pets
We keep the doors and windows shut: Charrul Malik
Celebrating a pet-friendly Diwali can be challenging, but we do what we can within our home to ensure our pets’ well-being. We decorate our home with lights but refrain from bursting crackers. To protect our pets from the loud noise outside, we keep the doors and windows shut. This approach allows us to enjoy the festival while prioritising our pets’ safety.
We use earmuffs to help him: Ashish Kapoor
I opt for pet-friendly decorations, including LED lights and pet-safe

Ashish Kapoor and Archana Karmarkar with their pets
Sometimes, we travel to quiet destinations: Archana Karmarkar
I prefer an eco-friendly Diwali. I light up my house with
and candles. To protect Leo from loud noises, I keep him indoors and avoid evening walks with him during the evening on Diwali. I ensure my windows are shut, give him his favourite treats and toys, and play his favourite movie to keep him distracted. I spend quality time with my pet at home every festive occasion to keep him calm and happy. However, since Diwali is a day of celebration, I dress him in traditional outfits and prepare his favourite pet-friendly
and cookies. Sometimes, we travel to quiet destinations.
