    New Horizons Band Begins Season

    Dust off your horns and drums, blow out the cobwebs and join the Helena New Horizons Concert Band. Practices are held every Monday night from 7pm to 8:30pm in the Choir Rehearsal Room at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. The first rehearsal was for him on September 12th, but you can join the group at any time.

    The Helena Band is affiliated with the New Horizons International Music Association (http://newhorizonsmusic.org/), a global organization dedicated to promoting adult music production. The band he formed in February 2011 with 15 musicians. We currently have over 50 active players. The band’s conductors are Tom Mazanek, Jerry Sept, Jim Perkins and Larry Irwin.

    The band’s musical selection includes marches, medleys, show tunes, movie themes, and classic favorites. Adult musicians of all skill levels are welcome to join the band. There is no entry fee, but the band asks for a $10 monthly donation to help cover costs.

    Shayna Steele is said to “unleash enough voltage to light up the West End” of London.

    “I am so grateful to be able to perform in front of an audience again and use my music for healing,” she said.

    Steele has been called an “R&B diva” and has been called a jazz and pseudo-jazz singer, but she calls herself a “soul singer who literally sings from the heart.”

    She also considers herself a multi-genre singer.

    “I grew up on Motown and rhythm and blues,” but her exposure to jazz in New York City changed her music dramatically. She survived 9/11, became a parent, and so has her life experience leading up to going through the pandemic.

    Her distinctive and powerful voice can be heard singing in the background of Bette Midler, Rihanna, Moby and Kelly Clarkson. She has also spent eight years as a Broadway ensemble member of ‘Rent’ and ‘Hairspray’ and has sung on several film soundtracks.

    Steele’s third album, “Rise,” reached number three on the US iTunes jazz charts, and Snarky Puppy featured Steele and her hard drive on the band’s Grammy-winning album, “Family, Dinner, Volume.” I chose the song “Gone Under”. 1.

    September Programs Offered at MHS

    The Montana Historical Society once again offers a wide range of programs at the Helena facility, but you don’t have to attend most programs in person to enjoy history.

    “Stephen Hunt and John Knight: Proximal Works In Situ” runs through October 22 at the Montana Artist Refuge Gallery at 101 Basin St., Basin.

    Montana native Paul Lavigne, who calls himself an “evolving artist,” will exhibit original landscape paintings at Framing & Art Supply in Queen City in September.

    LaVigne says he has been drawing since he was a child and has explored watercolor, pen, ink and acrylics. But his passion was oil painting, which allowed him to create more realistic water and skies.LaVigne is inspired by the beauty of the natural landscapes that surround us. His goal is to be able to capture moments in nature and share them with others. Although primarily self-taught, he enjoys being inspired and mentored by Helena artists Lauren Kovic, Dale Livesey and the late Carolyn Caldwell.

    “Art has been so good for me. Not only is it a creative outlet, I met my lovely wife in a watercolor class!” he said.
