At just 10 years old, Noella McMarr is believed to be the youngest transgender model ever to walk the New York Fashion Week runway in both February and September.
“It’s cool to have that title,” said the Chicago fashionista. In February, Noella performed at Trans Clothing Company’s Runway 7 show. On Saturday, she opened and closed Renacio’s show.
“I usually do high-fashion power walks, so it was fun to do something new… this time I had to tell a story,” said the model. Noela’s parents, Dee and Ray McMarr, believe it is their job to nurture Noela’s dreams, including being an advocate for other transgender children.
“The fact that she has a desire to be an activist and to be seen by other transgender children, very often works against her, especially in the current political climate. We know it’s very important in the world…children like her,” Dee explained. Around the age of two, Noela told her parents that she was a girl and that they would support her on her journey. I confided in them. Through her work, she wants people to know that transgender children are no different than other children.
“We were just born the wrong body. And we found out–and we just changed genders.” Plans include walking the runway at Paris Fashion Week.
