Being a freshman at one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the country can be intimidating at first. Adjusting to college life is a process and can take some time, but with the help of fellow seniors, adjusting will be easier than ever.
We all know simple advice like going to class and taking notes, but your freshman year is about getting the most out of yourself and doing your best. Now is your chance to set the tone for the years to come. Here’s what a fellow Louisiana State University senior had to say.
1. make connections with the network
“Join a club that’s part of your major, attend an event, socialize.
Networking and making connections is important during college. It is a chance to gather information and meet people with the same interests. It’s also a great opportunity to surround yourself with new perspectives and ideas that help you explore yourself and your interests.
This opens doors, provides opportunities, and makes you feel more connected on campus. Getting an internship in your freshman year can be difficult, but building your network will make the process of finding an internship easier down the road.
2. Even if you don’t know your major
One thing many freshmen like to do is tell everyone what their major is. This is often one of the first questions new students are asked her. Some know exactly what they want, others are not so sure.

It’s okay if you don’t yet know exactly which subject you want to focus on. Your freshman year is all about exploring your likes and dislikes by using your resources and getting to know the people around you.

Older students like Marshall have found that starting assignments early gives them more time to make corrections that lead to better grades.
Four. Put your mental health first
Mental health helps individuals determine how to deal with stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Jaylin Darensbourg, her third year student studying film and television, encourages freshmen to take care of their health.
“Stay focused on your studies and put your mental health first,” said Darrensbourg. “Take your time with your assigned task. If you feel overwhelmed, take a step back and breathe.”
It’s easy to get caught up in schoolwork that can degrade your mental health. It may sound simple, but take a breath and take it one step at a time. The Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds estimates that 73% of college students experience some kind of mental health crisis. It may seem so, but you are not alone.
Mental health tips include getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, exercising, and participating in activities that interest you. LSU offers a variety of mental health resources, including He ThePhone, a 24-hour crisis counseling and support line that students can call or text her at 225-924-5781. LSU Mental Health Service also offers a free online anonymous self-assessment that can direct students to personalized resources. Mental Health Services are located on his second floor in his LSU Student Health Center and are open weekdays from 8am to 5pm.

Five. Learn material, not just study
Study the class material. Just memorizing it will hurt you in the long run. Kinesiology senior her Alandria Garrett warns freshmen about cumulative assignments.
