Make room for more awards at Tampa General Hospital (TGH). The latest was delivered by Lt. Gov. Janet Nunez While she was visiting TGH today.
Nunez presented TGH with the award in recognition of its continued efforts to reduce the number of unnecessary Caesarean (Cesarean) deliveries and promote safe vaginal deliveries. The lieutenant governor was joined by Dr. Joseph Radapothe Florida Surgeon General, and employees of the State Medical Administration and the Florida Department of Health.
“To surpass the national goal of reducing unnecessary caesarean sections for the second year in a row is a tremendous achievement for everyone working at Tampa General’s Women and Children’s Institute.” John Coolis, President and CEO of TGH. “We are honored to receive this award from Lt. Nunez and Surgeon Radapo as we continue our journey to provide the safest, highest quality care for mothers and their babies in the country.”
The current national caesarean section rate is 32%. Tampa General said he achieved a 21.4% caesarean section rate — surpassing his 23.6% target set by Healthy People 2030. This is a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services women’s and children’s health initiative focused on preventing pregnancy complications and maternal mortality and helping women. Stay healthy before, during and after pregnancy.
Tampa General has delivered more babies than any other hospital in Tampa Bay since October 1, 2021, with nearly 6,500 deliveries at the hospital.

Caesarean delivery can prevent injury and death in high-risk pregnancies, but the procedure is also associated with an increased risk of severe bleeding, flexion, blood clots, and complications in future pregnancies. Unnecessary caesarean sections may result in longer recovery times. As a result, efforts to reduce caesarean sections performed on low-risk mothers are a focus for many hospitals and health care providers.
Earlier this year, Tampa General Hospital was named 2022-23 Best Hospitals and Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Named 2022 Best Maternity Hospital by Newsweek. TGH is also one of only 15 hospitals in Florida recognized to exceed the US Healthy People’s 2030 goal of reducing unnecessary caesarean sections in 2021, and will have Voted Best Maternity Hospital by Newsweek and Leapfrog Group.
