In recent years, the Estonian Association of Professional Musicians has won the most Ministry of Culture grants for music organizations and event promoters. Evo Lille, music adviser to the Ministry of Culture, said that subsidies to the Society have not expanded in the current era of the Music Committee, but agrees that the situation must change.
“I think having a wider committee would certainly make a better impression. In fact, some members of the committee found it difficult to make decisions in their own capacity. They had a conflict of interest,” Leal said.
In February of this year, in an appeal to the then Minister of Culture, classical music performers, led by cellist Aare Tanmesar, criticized the music committee’s prejudices. A new proposal was submitted to the Minister of Culture, Estonian Writers Association (EAÜ), Estonian Record Producers Association (EFÜ), Estonian Traditional Music Center, Jazz Estonia (Eesti Jazzliit) and Music Estonia.
Helen Sildona, founding member of Music Estonia, said: “Since the state supports diversity in the music industry with public funds, the composition of the Commission must reflect the genre diversity of the music sector. it won’t,” he said.
The Ministry of Culture has initiated the establishment of a new commission.
“We try to put as many diverse experts on these committees as possible, who are familiar with the genres and groups that typically apply to us for funding,” Leal said. In addition to reviewing the composition of the committee, the criteria for awarding grants will also be reassessed, he said.
