43rd This season of the Illinois College Fine Arts Series features the return of the Engelbach Hart Festival and a variety of performances showcasing both internationally acclaimed musicians and IC faculty.
Steelpan musician Liam Teague and IC drumline director Tyler Carpenter will host a family concert on September 18th at 3pm at IC’s Rammelkamp Chapel.
Pianist Pei-I Wang will have a solo concert on October 19th at 7:30pm.
The Engelbach Heart Festival will feature concerts by Russian-American master pianist Alla Voskoboynikova from St. Louis on November 11 at 7:30 pm, IC Faculty Collage Concert on November 12 at 7:30 pm, and November 13 pm. 3 p.m. Concert by pianist George Winston.
Other concerts during the season include:
• Houston-based early music ensemble Istanpitta January 21 at 7:30 PM
• Organist Jan Kraybill February 24th at 7:30pm;
• Momenta Quartet March 26 at 3:00 pm;
• Hub New Music, Boston-based wind and string ensemble, April 14 at 7:30 pm.
Teague is a Professor of Music and Director of Steel Pan Studies at Northern Illinois University, leads the NIU Steel Band, and is the Steel Band Director at the Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Door County, Wisconsin. He has won several competitions, including the Trinidad and Tobago National Steel Band Festival Solo Championship in his hometown and the St. Louis Symphony Volunteers Association Young Artists Competition. He also publishes the steel pan method for beginners.
Istanpitta was formed in 1994 as a way to implement interpretations of medieval dance music developed as part of a university thesis project.The ensemble now plays music from 10th up to 14th Over the centuries including traditional Middle Eastern dance tunes. Rather than memorizing songs in a written-on-paper fashion, the musicians focus on performing in a manner that resembles “the dynamic historical realities of musicians in the field”.
Chamber quartet Have New Music will premiere a new work by IC Professor Emeritus Timothy Kramer. The ensemble was founded in his 2013 with a dedication to building community through new art. Since then, we have commissioned dozens of new works, working with emerging and established composers to create fresh music for specific combinations of flute, clarinet, violin and cello.
Tickets for the family concert are $5. Individual tickets for other series concerts are $15, except for the free Engelbach-Hart concert. Season tickets are $70. Students of all ages are admitted free to all concerts.
