MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) – People’s Bank Theater announced it has received a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support its “First Friday Music Series.” The series is free and will be held outdoors on Putnam Street every 1st Friday from May 2023 to October 2023. The theater also plans to expand programming in the Stage Door space by hosting a series of educational activities.
This grant will help implement a free outdoor music series on Putnam Street in front of the People’s Bank Theater as part of Marietta Main Street’s “First Friday” event. In addition, the number of activities in the stage door space will increase. As the financial size and frequency of headlining acts increases, theaters are finding it harder to fulfill part of our mission to develop cultural awareness through educational programs.
People’s Bank Theater hopes to serve its community by offering educational or participatory programs, and has made the “First Friday Series” and “Stage Door” spaces less formal for both artists and audiences. We would like to use it as a potentially welcoming forum without.
The People’s Bank Theater is a 944-seat historic theater in downtown Marietta, Ohio. Built in 1919 as a hippodrome, it was renamed the Colony Theater in 1949. Closed in 1985, the People’s Bank Theater was fully restored in 2016 and now hosts more than 100 of his events to over 30,000 patrons annually.
