After making it big on the small screen, actress Sargan Mehta moved into production, appearing in Punjabi films and winning hearts. She didn’t choose Bollywood blindly, she says, because she wanted to feel confident in the work she put in.
“I was pretty sure I didn’t want to just be there and do two songs without emphasizing the story of the movie. I don’t think it would be very exciting for me to do that.” I always wanted to do something different, and if someone wants to see a particular type of work of mine, they can also watch it in Punjabi. If you do, then you must be doing something different or new, and the response to Cuttputlli has been great.
Meanwhile, the producer and actress creates meaningful and beloved content in the Punjabi-speaking world. “I think as the industry evolves, so will people’s acceptance. There will come a time when people will embrace new genres, in fact even when I did Qismat it didn’t do well in Punjabi because it’s not the typical comedy film that Punjabi is used to. That movie went on to be one of the biggest blockbuster movies and then a second movie was made, so if it gives people a lot of meat and content to enjoy, that’s It doesn’t matter what genre,” says Sargun, who recently produced the movie Saunkan Saunkne.
Meanwhile, of working with her husband, actor and producer Ravi Dubey, she said: Working with Ravi is a lot of fun. We are both in sync and creative people. But we both have different perspectives on all subjects. Where I’m wrong, he catches it and vice versa. And as to who calls the shot and makes the decision, it depends on what kind of decision it is. The roles don’t overlap (laughs), and I’m doing well.”
