It was announced by publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and Koei Tecmo’s studio team NINJA. Rise of the Roninis a new action RPG coming to PlayStation 5 in 2024.

Team NINJA is very excited to introduce our latest action RPG game. The game takes you on an epic and free journey as a ronin at the dawn of a new era in Japan. I started this project seven years ago. Since then, development has been slow and free, much like Ronin’s spirit. I am very happy to finally be able to bring this title to the world. We are grateful to have been able to make this announcement together with PlayStation, who have supported us and this project over the years.
Rise of the Ronin is a combat-focused open-world action RPG set in turbulent Japan. 300 years of the Edo period, the end of the Edo period, commonly known as the “Bakumatsu”. Set in the late 19th century, Japan is plagued by a civil war raging between the Tokugawa shogunate and anti-shogunate factions, Western influence seeping in, while an oppressive ruler and a deadly disease. , facing its darkest times.
In this time of mayhem, you embody the character of Ronin. This is a warrior free to make his own choices, not bound by a master. Rise of the Ronin is a new Team Ninja experience that immerses you in a history-inspired world, combining famous combat action with katanas and more, along with new firearm arsenals that depict the unique personality of the era.
At Koei Tecmo, we have worked on many titles with historical themes. but, Rise of the Ronin, we have taken the next big step. We wanted to take things to the next level by leveraging all the skills and knowledge we’ve gained over the years. It’s a project. Nonetheless, I will use my experience creating samurai and ninja action games to guide me through this journey.
In addition to action elements, we will also work tenaciously to create a multi-layered story that depicts the world of the end of the Edo period and the revolution. Every character you meet has their own righteousness and motives, and whether you decide to side with them or against them…each decision you make matters. We look forward to freeing you up to immerse yourself as Ronin in our open gameplay.
