Boxed copies of Nintendo Switch games are the biggest entertainment products in terms of revenue generated at UK retailers so far in 2022.
A new report from the Entertainment Retailers Association shows that Switch game sales have hit £88.7m since January 1, down 12.5% from this time last year.
PlayStation, which combined PS4 and PS5 physical games, was the next highest gaming format with £79.6m, up 6.5% year-on-year.
In 2021, PlayStation was number two behind Switch, but will have to settle for number three this year as vinyl album sales climbed 6.5% to reach £80.9m.
Xbox software sales, which includes both Xbox One and Series X|S box games, fell 14.3% to number seven with sales of £17.8m. It surpassed only PC, whose sales fell 30.7% to £579,986.
The Xbox was surpassed by CD at £68.9m, DVD at £66.8m and Blu-Ray at £52.1m. Only the latter increased by 10% compared to now in 2021.
Combined, video games brought in retail revenue of £186.6m, well ahead of music’s £149.8m and film and TV’s £118.9m.
