Tylo Estrada and David Vilard hit big in the Giants’ overtime win over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.
In a season that has now become meaningless, these hits mean a lot.
Estrada’s three-run home run in the 10th secured a 10-7 comeback victory for the Giants on Monday night. started 9 rallies.
Then an RBI double by David Villar from two outs in the ninth — scoring the recently activated Austin Slater from first base — tied the game and allowed the Giants to complete their comeback.
Estrada and Villar are two players the Giants want to see on their roster next year. Is Villar ready for a full-time role, or will the Giants choose the final year of 37-year-old Evan Longoria’s contract? Could it be gears? Their performance in Monday’s game may help us find some answers as the rest of this lost season ticks away.
All of the Giants’ remaining 15 games, win or lose, are reminders of just how far this team has fallen in a year. But each one of the most important offseasons of the last decade brings him a step closer to one. A place where a proud organization hopes to save some spirit and find the next group of players it can take with them into the postseason.
That offseason got a little more complicated just hours before the first pitch when the Detroit Tigers plucked Giants general manager Scott Harris as president of baseball operations. Farhan Zaidi hired Harris after the 2019 season because of his experience helping build the World Series-winning Chicago Cubs. Harris’ replacement is in more holes Zaidi, a front his office will deal with when the season ends on his October 5th.
Most importantly, they need to get creative to identify a younger, more athletic and talented team for next year. The match means nothing to the standings, but it is important for the veterans called up to show they deserve a spot on the 2023 overhauled roster.
Mike Yastrzemski snapped the 13-0 skid with a solo home run to center field to cut the Rockies’ deficit to 4-2 in the fourth inning. After his worst year as a Giants, is Yastrzemski’s future in flux? The Giants have nine of his players eligible for arbitration, including Yastrzemski. Does his tip from Zaidi on the roster shuffle mean some (or most) of those players won’t get bids?
One of those nine players, Jakob Junis, gave up six runs in four innings on Monday. Perhaps the Coors Fields pitcher’s unfriendly vibe did little to help him. He has had consistent years in the back end of the Giants rotation.
Cole Weitz was the first player to be drafted into the big leagues by Zaidi and Harris, and had a promising fastball in the scoreless eighth inning out of the bullpen. Will we see under-the-radar prospects rapidly promoted to big league teams in the years to come?
Those last 15 games don’t mean much to the Giants’ standings, but the team’s Brass (now GM-less) is watching closely.
Note
Carlos Rodon postpones the start to Friday as he nurses a blister and torn fingernail on his right thrower. The move should not reduce Rodon’s number of scheduled starts for the rest of the year, and he should start about three more times.
The Giants reinstated Slater from the injured list before Monday’s game in Colorado, selecting Heriot Ramos. Ramos’ call-up was supposed to be short. The Giants’ all-time best prospect batted . 223 in 123 games in Triple-A Sacramento this year, 4-for-20 in nine big-league games this year, and underwhelmed in a year of significant growth. I got
