Most thieves target homes that look like easy targets or where it is obvious that the house is not occupied.
Security features such as locked security doors and screens, alarm systems, CCTV cameras and sensor lights are just some of the features that are a known deterrent.
Sheds and garages contain portable, easy to sell items. So make sure you also lock your garage and shed while you are away.
Follow these tips to give yourself the best chance of protecting your property:
- Ensure all doors and windows are locked securely using a key locking system. Don’t just flick the latch lock on your security screens.
- Hide valuables in a safe, non-descript place or remove them from clear view.
- Car keys should be secured within the home and not left in an easily accessible location such as key holders and hooks.
- Arrange for a trusted friend or relative to house sit or check on your property whilst you are away.
- Arrange for your mail to be collected or redirected.
- Secure your wheelie bins and arrange for someone to put the bin/s out.
- Lock away tools, ladders and anything that can be used to gain access your home in your garage or shed.
- Do not leave keys concealed in ‘hiding spots’ outside your home.
- Make your home looked lived in; have timers for the lights and leave some inexpensive items such as tea towels on the clothes line.
- Arrange for a neighbour to park their car in your driveway occasionally to give the impression that someone is coming and going.
- Ask your neighbour if they can mow your grass or collect junk mail and newspapers.
- Ask your neighbours to contact 000 or Crime Stoppers immediately if they see anything suspicious around your residence.
