RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Home safety is always important but with the arrival of springtime and summer vacations it’s a good idea to check up on your home security.
Detective Joey Trotter with Carson City Sheriff’s Office says that home burglaries and car break ins are more common in warmer months which is why we need to be on high alert. Officials say that some of the best ways to keep your home protected are:
– Making sure that you’re locking your door every time you leave
– Not leaving your garage door open
– Having automatic timers on your lights so that it looks like you’re home, even if you’re not.
For added protection, Trotter says into nvest in an alarm or security camera system.
“If it was up to me and I was mayor for the day I would make every business and every homeowner must have cameras because that’s our bread and butter and it’s how we solve a lot of our crimes here in this city,” says Trotter.
Trotter says getting to know your neighbors, and recruiting others that live nearby to keep an eye on your home can also keep criminals at bay:
“Just knowing your neighbors is huge and the more friendly you are to them the more likely that they will keep a watchful eye out for you also,” says Trotter.
Carson City residents who plan on leaving for a few weeks can also call the Carson City Sheriff’s Office dispatch at 775-887-2008.
They will assign extra patrols to your neighborhood.
